The research shows that LLM safety declines as the format of training data becomes more complex, and reveals a trade-off with task performance under format-separated training, demonstrating the importance of balancing safety and performance. Elith places the same emphasis on balancing safety and performance in its own fine-tuning of LLMs for clients, and selected this research for the sponsor award in recognition of its valuable findings.
